Development resuming.

Long time no see! First of all, thanks to everyone for playing this little project of mine. It's really, really heartwarming to know that people want me to keep going. There's been a time during this period I didn't even want to look at the game, as I felt very ashamed and embarrassed that thousands of people have seen my errors, poor design decisions and bad drawings. But I don't want to disappoint anyone or myself, so I'll complete what I started.

So, let's go through everything!:

# Issue 1: Status of the game.

I'm working again on the game. It's been a while, so now I have new ideas. There's some things I want to rework, and others I'll remove.

Some of the reworks involve changing heavily how the base game work (schedules, events), so this will take me a while. I've been coding game stuff a bit on my free time, so I've learned a bunch during this time, and want to make things better and more scalable.

Some things might not work out, and that's why I'm gonna work on it privately for a bit. That leads to the next issue.

# Issue 2: Porting game to Godot 4.

Since there's gonna be some core changes of how the game works, I've been thinking if I should just start over the code on Godot 4. Godot (version 3.5) is the engine I've been developing the game on. Last year Godot 4.0 released, but it wasn't optimal for development yet, so I kept developing on 3.5.

I've been testing Godot 4.2 for a month, and it's SO much better to work on. Now I've returned to 3.5 to keep working on Love Inn, and it's been painful.

Here's the problem: Godot 4 supports two modes, Forward and Compatibility. Forward is the one that renders things nicely in 3D, but uses Vulkan, which means older computers can't run it. Compatbility is the one meant to be used in older PCs, so that's the one I'm using. There's some things, graphics wise, that are better in 3.5, than in 4 in Compatibility, the most important one right now being SSAO (the "shadow" that appears around edges of 3D objets).

Even if I get a new GPU and develop in Forward, people with older PCs would need to play a downgraded version. So for the sake of everyone, I'll still develop in Compatibility even if I upgrade GPU. The features not yet in Godot 4 Compatibility, are being worked on by Godot contributors, so hopefully by the time I release a new version, the features are on par with Godot 3.5.

# Issue 3: Patreon.

Since I'll be experimenting, (almost convinced of) porting, and might need to backpedal on some ideas, I won't open Patreon yet. These things take a lot of time, and some things will take me weeks but players won't make a difference, so doesn't feel fair to me to have Patreon open right now.

I've been seeing more and more devs and artists having their Patreon page closed by Patreon. I guess some violated their guidelines, but others I'm not so sure about, so I'm a bit cautious, might need to change platforms eventually, not sure right now. My ultime goal is still to be able to work full time on this and release on Steam when the game is in a good state.

Personal life: the time off the game paid off! I finally finished my law degree. And the gov job I had some exams to do went kind ok at first, but I needed to be top 1% and only got top 10%, but such is life.

Here's some random drawings in different styles since I've missed the world and characters:

We love you!

I'm a bit late, but I'm happy for you Croco.

Good luck with your project. I know this is never a cakewalk, especially right after graduating, but the first versions had a really nice vibe and a lot of people enjoyed it.

Take your time.

I'm a bit late now myself haha Thank you very much Hetzer :) It's definitely been a wild ride, but I'm enjoying every moment.

I appreciate your words.

Thanks a lot Brodn :)

Glad to see you're back! Congrats on your law degree :) I really liked your game so it's nice to see you returning to game development. The vibe feels good, the art looks really great, and the concept is really enjoyable. I'm a game developer too and it's nice to follow someone else while they create something!

Looking forward to what you'll make!

I appreciate the kind words William :)

As a gamedev you know these things take time, but feels nice once they are done right? I wish you good luck with your project as well! If you ever want to share something I'd be glad to look at it :)

Thanks! By the way, now that I'm here I thought I might as well just ask you something if it's fine by you. How has your experience been with Godot so far? I recently participated in Braceys' game jam (this ain't my main account btw) and I saw a lot of people using Godot. I haven't paid much attention to it really, but seeing that you use Godot as well it kinda peeks my interest now. What would you say its strengths are? I might just learn it after all!

Haha I understand the alt-account for this type of thing.

Well I love Godot, so might be biased! When I first started gamedev like 3 years ago, the first thing I tried was Unity, and it was a horrible experience, things felt really slow. By now you must be used to it, but once you open Godot and see that you can type code in and just open whatever scene you are in in seconds, there's no comparison. I understand not everyone cares that much, but to me it's important that it's so lightweight and fast, makes iteration easier.

The biggest thing tho must be the licensing; I never liked the idea of needing to adhere to the rules of a company, I've come to appreciate open source more with time. Right now it's also a very good time to hop in, Godot 4 is SO much better than Godot 3, and it's just fun to develop in general in Godot, can't explain it any other way.. Also I strongly encourage you to give gdscript a try, since it's really easy to pick up and learn, it's very integrated in the engine with plenty of documentation.

If you ever give it a go, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

PFFT I just left a comment on the 1.5 update. That's amazing! I am looking forward to it dude. WELCOME BACK! Congrats on the law degree. I'm glad to see you make quite a return to developing the game again. As for a patreon alternative that's much more freeing, I'd say SubscribeStar or Ko-Fi. Those two as far as I've seen are quite clean in how they treat their people. The new map sketch looks really nice. I am glad to see you are well under way to get back into it. Take your time and something I am most certain will blossom into something beautiful for all to enjoy. I can't wait to see the day it does come to steam and get the love it deserves and delivers. I will patiently await that day and buy it as soon as it is available. Good luck and to a fruitful future!

Scott! It's been a while! I just read your other comment, you are always so kind, it's truly a pleasure to receive messages from you.

Thanks for the warm welcome :) I'll definitely work hard on this and try to make it something more and more enjoyable. Some things like porting and such take a long time, but I really think it's worth it. Hopefully in not too long I'll be able to share something cool I've been working on and then get some feedback to see how you and other people like it. This is a really iterative process so only after mistakes it can get better.

I hope everything is going well with your life, and as we talked about before, winter is going away, and a nice spring is coming. Wish you the best Scott.

Yeah, things have actually gotten quite well since we last spoke. We no longer have a wood crisis. We were almost out of wood for over a few weeks but recently we've been getting more wood than I can split and stack in a day. I still got some stuff to work on but I'd rather be busy than just sad and cold. And very true, mistakes no matter if it is the same one, will only help you get better at what you're trying to do. This Spring is quite early but luckily we're getting more wood soon than what's available at the moment so it'll last a while hopefully. Though it means I've got quite a bit of shoveling to do since we had SO MUCH SNOW this year. It was super excessive and a real pain to work around. Visiting the game again reminded me how pleasant the OST is so I look forward still for what comes next. All best dude, looking forward to what's cooking.

Damn I always have a hard time during winter and don't ever see snow, can't imagine winter where you are from! I guess with a lot of snow also comes a lot of water, so no lack of wood for you. Indeed it's best to do something and feel active!

Thankfully a lot of wonderful japanese composers that have royalty free music; once this gets a bit bigger I'd love to contact them and see if I can have some commissioned music from them, would be really cool!

And same to you :)
